MEET THE AUTHOR

Are designed to excite and motivate about the whole week. Simon will use a PowerPoint Presentation on the big screen to intrigue them with relevant background images.

For Year 6 Simon will be assigned a 55 min slot for this session and he will allow adequat time for questions and answers.

OTHER INTERESTED CLASSES - a cut down session to fit into library time. Please liaise with Barb.

WORKSHOPS

To develop their writing skills, as well as talking about the history and development of crime fiction, and its connection to real crime investigation as it evolved in paralle.

  • How to open a story using a technique many professional writers favor (ideal for writing mysteries).

This involves Simon giving them a mysterious scenario involving two characters meeting, then walking the students through how to deliver the opening deftly. Simon will get them to write 10 well aimed sentences as they go along. This usually takes students forward quite dramatically into a new level of writing they didn't think they could achieve. It also sets up a storyline which they can then continue, on a crime or mystery-related theme. It also produces an instant 'outcome piece', i.e.. an opening or prologue or first chapter to a mystery story which could be put on a school magazine, anthology, or on its website etc.

At the end of the workshop Simon will call for volunteers and give them positive technique reinforcement from which the whole group can further benefit.

I WOULD LOVE TO SET UP A WIKI TO DISPLAY THESE PIECES OF WORK TO ENABLE STUDENTS TO SHARE THEM WTH THEIR FAMILIES, AND AS A PROMOTIONAL ACTIVITY FOR THE LIBRARY.

SOLVE A CRIME

Students are given some quick 'detective exams' (observation & detection crime problems to solve) based on the sort of stuff Simon used to have set for him in the Police Academy. These are simple 'what if 'scenarios that are photocopied and handed out, then students would have 10 minutes or slightly more to read them, and guess 'who has dunit' and then we'd give the answer and the reasons for it, so they could check their own skills and accuracy?

One scenario or observation test, or a simple forensic type riddle, per lunch break. It would be answered in writing and marked by the student themselves at the end when the correct answer is given out. Fun, educational, on theme and not too embarrassing if one messes it up totally....
